National Museum of History and Decorative Arts
A military barracks turned fascination cultural experience
Since ceasing to operate as a military barracks, Collins Barracks has been home to two vastly different but equally interesting collections; the National Museums of History and Decorative Arts.
The History museum is largely focused on Ireland’s military history with an emphasis on the War of Independence and the 1916 Easter Sunday Rising. It has an impressive array of both permanent and temporary exhibits.
The Decorative Arts museum displays a beautiful variety of silver, ceramics, glassware, furniture, clothing, jewellery and coins. One of the highlights is the permanent exhibition on the legendary Irish architect and furniture designer Eileen Gray, which is an absolute must-see!
Collins Barracks is only a 10 minute drive or 25 minute walk from the Drury Court, and a trip there really can’t be missed if you’re visiting Dublin.
